Occupation*George Cooper was a Stevedore, Shipwright.
Residence*He lived at Claremont, Western AustraliaG; 8 Victoria Ave.
Note*COOPER, George, of Fremantle & Claremont

Mr Cooper was born in 1861 and after leaving school was apprenticed to his father, who was also named George and was a boat builder although 1 can find no record of him having plied his trade in W.A.

George, junior married Emily Chamberlain at the Fremantle Church of England on the 30/7/1884, (the daughter of Charles Chamberlain), he was at that time working for Chamberlain's boat building enterprises at South Beach, Fremantle and later on around late 1902 W.A. Chamberlain and George Cooper began a partnership which after successfully constructing a number of craft, terminated during 19 10, when George set up on his own account at Claremont.

For details of the craft built during this partnership refer to the section dealing with W.A. Chamberlain.

As a boat builder he first appears in the Almanacs from 1886 and in that same year he appears as a Fremantle ratepayer with his premises, a four roomed cottage, at Lot 169 Norfolk street, Fremantle. In 1887 he also purchased Lot 13 Leak Street, Fremantle. During 1900 to 1902 Mr Cooper resided at lot 13 South Street. He and his wife had three sons and when the partnership ended, George bought a property at Claremont, No.8 Victoria Avenue and built a boat shed at the waters edge which is still there today where he began building river craft as well as the odd pearling lugger.

The first of the three registered vessels that George built on his own account was the Arafura, 0/No.131601, a two masted schooner with dimensions of 36 x 12 x 5 feet. She was built during 1911 for Joseph M Johnson, a pearler from Broome and the vessel was sold overseas in 1929.

Also in 1911 he built the Ida Lloyd, 0/No. 131604 with similar dimensions to the above, for Oscar Blackman, also a pearler from Broome.

The third registered vessel was the Betty Margaret, 0/No. 131640 and similar to the others. She was built during 1912 to the order of the Broome pearling fleet owner Edmund Harold Hunter.

As well as his boat building enterprise George bought out the boat hire business that belonged to Mr J.J. Vick. The business was called "Vix" pleasure boats, Claremont Jetty. This was in 1905 and as his advertisements say, "boats on hire by hour, day or week. All boats guaranteed seaworthy and fully equipped. Fishing tackle and bait kept in stock!'

This boat hire business was sold in 1927, upon the death of George Cooper Senior to Mr Frank Sawkins.

When George's wife died in 1943 the house and boat shed in Victoria Avenue were sold to another boat builder named Peter Mews.

- 27/7/1905: Mentioned in the Obituary of his son, John - The demise of Mr. [John] Adams revives an interesting literary speculation. His father Williams Adams, whose remains are buried in the old cemetery at South Fremantle, was one of Wellington's veterans at Waterloo, and it is also asserted by some that he was identical with the Adams who figures in the well-known humorous [sic] piece "How Bill Adams Won the Battle of Waterloo". The old cemetery has gone to decay, but strangely enough the headstone erected over the remains of the veteran is still in a good state of preservation and the inscription is still as plainly legible as it was when it was first chiselled on the stone.
Regarding the above, the following paragraph, which appeared in the curiosities page of Mary (1905) issue of the "Strand Magazine" is of interest:- "I send you a curious photo taken out here. Most of your readers will have read the story. 'How Bill Adams Won the Battle of Waterloo'. Shortly after my arrival in Fremantle, 13 years ago, I recited this piece at a social entertainment, and at the close was asked by a couple of old pensioners if I had really met old Bill Adams before he died. I replied that the old gentleman only existed in imagination. My surprise can be imagined when they told me that he had actually resided here and was buried in the local cemetery. At the first opportunity I went out with my camera and took a photo of the headstone. The inscription on the headstone, as shown in the photo, is: "Sacred to the memory of William Adams, one of the heroes of Waterloo, who died December 12, 1867; aged 75 years". (The West Australian, copy/file,ref #151)

- Wounded at the Battle of Waterloo, 1815 "A Link with Waterloo: Slightly to the left of the main drive in the Fremantle Cemetery and probably a chain away from the entrance, is a tombstone marking the last resting place of one who was Western Australia's link with Wellington's famous victory over Napoleon in 1815, at Waterloo. The inscription reads: "Sacred to the memory of William Adams, one of the heroes of Waterloo, who died on December 12, 1867, aged 75." It is the general belief that the central character in Snazelle's witty satirical poem, "How Bill Adams won the Battle of Waterloo," was merely a creation of the author's imagination, and never had a real existence. That belief is erroneous: the man whose mortal remains are in Fremantle Cemetery was Snazelle's Bill Adams. That was established about twenty years ago, when G.H. Snazelle came to Fremantle, had a photograph taken of the gravestone - then in its original position in the former graveyard at Alma Street - and told in a contemporaneous magazine the story of how he came to write his famous poem. As a child he had listened avidly to tales of the Waterloo campaign told to him by Bill Adams, who had a vivid imagination and who, it may be believed, was more concerned that his story should be romantic than it should be strictly veracious. When he had grown up and was making his mark in literature, the talks told him in his infancy by Bill Adams remained with him and found expression in the delightful form which has entertained a generation of readers. Beyond that Bill Adams arrived in the colony in 1830 in the emigrant ship "Rockingham," with his wife and two children (a girl aged two, and a girl aged six months), little is known of the life of Adams in Western Australia. As one of the Peel settlers, a grant of an area of land on the Murray River was allotted to him, but he never took it up. Ten more children, two boys and eight girls, were born to them in Western Australia, and members of fourth generation of Adams are residing in Fremantle today. The genuineness of his claim to be a Waterloo veteran was supported by the fact that he was wounded in the head at that historic battle, and thereafter wore throughout his life a silver plate in his head. At his death he was buried in the old Alma Street cemetery, but his wife (who was the first midwife in the colony) survived him by some years and was buried in the Skinner Street cemetery, which has recently been closed. About 1916, the Alma Street cemetery was closed, and the remains of those buried there were transferred to the present general cemetery. The silver plate was then found to be intact, and though a wish was expressed in medical circles that it should be removed, the deceased man's relatives would not agree, and it was re-interred with the remains. At the same time his wife's remains were removed from Skinner Street and re-interred with those of her husband. Bill Adams and his family came to the colony with my mother and grandparents, William and Hannah Leeder, in 1830. Four of his children were born at Monger's Lake (now Leederville) and were the first children to be born at the lake. I did not known Bill Adams very well. He died while I was at Pinjarra in the 'sixties; but I knew his wife, a grand woman, who may be called the "mother of Fremantle". The years in which Mrs. Adams attended maternity cases, both in Fremantle and Perth, say more new arrivals by hundreds than any previous period of the same duration. Many times Mrs. Adams walked to Perth from Fremantle when there was no conveyance available. The distance or the time of the day or night meant nothing to Mrs. Adams. If she was required for a maternity case she went to the case and nothing would prevent her. It has been stated many times that she never lost a case, although she attended hundreds without the assistance of a doctor. The Adams family did its share of pioneering work, and the name will never be forgotten in Fremantle".... Edited from'Western Pioneers: The Battle Well Fought' by J.E. Hammond, Imperial Printing Co. Ltd., Facsimile Edition 1980, Hesperian Press, Victoria Park, WA (WA Bicentennary, & ref #224)

- From Waterloo to Fremantle: There's a piece of history within 100 years of the main entrance of the Fremantle Cemetery - a tombstone, black with age - that provides a link with the battle of Waterloo. There lies the remains of William Adams reputed to have inspired the witty satirical ditty "How Bill Adams Won the Battle of Waterloo"....Many years ago, in England, a small boy listened wide-eyed to the fanciful tales of a man back from the Napoleonic wars, with emphasis on the famous battle on the field of Waterloo. The tale-teller, Williams, was an imaginative type, with many numerous sensational incidents to draw on and a silver plate in his head to prove his war service. The boy grew into manhood and established a reputation as a writer, the stories he had heard from the ex-soldier found expression in a witty poem "How Bill Adams Won the Battle of Waterloo". The writer was GH Snazell. Later on a visit to Fremantle, he verified that the Bill Adams of his verse was the William Adams who came to Western Australia in the early days of the settlement and who died here. Adams was buried in the Alma-st cemetery at Fremantle, but later the remains were transferred to the general cemetery. The tombstone, black with age, rests in a sea of white stones, and is slightly to the left of the main drive, about a chain from the main entrance. It bears the inscription: "Sacred to the memory of William Adams, one of the heroes of Waterloo, who died on December 12, 1867, aged 75 years".... (Westraliana,copy/file,ref #151)

Many of the ships were typical East Indiamen of the day, sturdy, wooden three-masted vessels with an all-square or perhaps a barque rig and suitable for carrying passengers or any cargo. On their way to WA the ships carried both colonists and the many goods they brought with them to till the land and establish their new society. The great investor Thomas Peel needed three ships for his family, servants and labourers. MR. JOHN ADAMS. (Western Mail 29/7/1905 pg 41)
One of the very oldest residents of Western Australia in the person of Mr. John Adams, died at bis home in South Fremantle early on Wednesday last, after short illness.
The deceased, who followed the occu- pation of a fisherman, was as well known in Fremantle as the local post-office, and was much esteemed by all the old resi- dents and the natives bf the Port. When only 12 months old the deceased, with his elder sisters now Mrs. Hanham, were brought to Western Australia in May, 1830, by their father, the late William Adams, in the barque Rockingham, which was the second immigrant ship to visit this part of Australia. The vessel was wrecked on a reef near Rockingham which was named after the ill-fated vessel -and Adams was carried ashore in his mother's arms little the worse for the exposure, which would have proved fatal to a less hardy child.
As a youth he took to fishing as a means of livelihood and, though he fol- lowed that calling for the greater part of his life, it is said that he never went further south of Fremantle than Safety Bay, and never as far north as Dongarra. About 40 years ago, he worked for Mr. John Bateman, the founder of the firm of J. and W. Bateman, as a whaler. At that time whales were plentiful in Fremantle waters. The sea mammals were beached on the sand near Arthur's Head, where their blubber and bone were extracted.
The deceased might easily have been one of the wealthiest residents of Fre- mantle, for at different times he was the owner of blocks of land In the centre of the town which are now very valuable But he appears to have evinced no de- esire to accumulate wealth, and kept on in the even tenor of his way, pursuing his calling as a fisherman until old age and failing health made it necessary a few years ago for him to give up such an arduous occupation.
The deceased leaves three sons, four daughters, 32 grand children, and three great-grand children. Quite a number of tho deceased's sisters. Mrs Hanham, Mrs. Sheen, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Headland, Mrs. Sweetman, Mrs. Davies, and Mrs. Hall, survive him. His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Adams, who was buried at Fremantle 14 yeers ago, at the age of 83, was known as "Old Granny" at Fremantle, doubt- lessly on account of the large number of her grand children.
The demise of Mr. Adams revives an interesting literary speculation. His father William Adams, whose remains are buried in the old cemetery at South Fre- mantle, was one of Wellington's veterans at Waterloo, and it is also asserted by some that he was identical with the Adams who figures in the well-known humorous piece, "How Bill Adams Won the Battle of Waterloo." The old cemetery has gone to decay, but strangely enough the headstone erected over the re- mains of the veteran is still in a good state of preservation and the inscription is still as plainly legible as it was when it was first chiselled on the stone.

Regarding the above, the following paragraph, which appeared in the curiosi- ties page of the March (1905) issue of the "Strand Magazine" is of interest:--"I send you a curious photo taken out here. Most of your readers will have read the story "How Bill Adams Won the battle of Waterloo." Shortly after my arrival in Fremantle, 13 years ago, I recited this piece at a social entertainment and at the close was asked by a couple of old pensioners if I had really met old Bill Adams before he died. I replied that the old gentleman only existed in imagi- nation. My surprise can be imagined when they told me that he had actually resided here and was buried in the local cemetery. At the first opportunity I sent out with my camera and took a photo of the headstone. The inscription on the headstone, as shown in the photo., is: 'Sacred to the memory of William Adams, one of the heroes of Waterloo, who died December 12, 1867, aged 75 years." The funeral of the late Mr. John Adams took place at the old Fremantle Ceme- tery yesterday afternoon, and his remains were interred in the Church of England portion, the Rev. G O Halloran reading the burial service. Quite a number of old Fremantle residents followed the remains to their last resting place. The chief mourners were Messrs. James, Henry and William Adams (sons), W. Hopkins (son- in-law), L. Hopkins, J. Adams. H. Adams, and H. and E. Gilmore (grand sons). Mrs. Sweetman, Mrs. Hall, and Mrs. Davies (sisters), Mrs. Jackson (niece), and Mr. J Davies (nephew). The mortuary arrange- meats were carried out by Messrs. A. E. Davies and Co., of Fremantle.8,9

Death of An Old Resident. Mrs. Mary Ann Davies, relict of the late Mr. William David Davies, of Fremantle, and probably the oldest Western Australian in the State, passed away on the 17th inst. at Fremantle in her 82nd year. Her father, Mr. William Adams (who was a Waterloo veteran) arrived at Fremantle in the ship Parmella, the first ship that brought settlers to Western Australia, in the year 1829. The expedition was in charge of Governor Stirling, the first Governor of the State. Mrs. Davies was born in 1831 at Garden Island, and has lived in this State up till the time of her death. In 1849 she married Mr. William Davis Davies, who pre-deceased her by 12 years. She leaves a grown-up family of four sons, five daughters, 52 grandchildren, and 17 greatgrand children to mourn their loss. The long funeral cortege moved from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. R. Rushby, Douro-road, South Fremantl, on Thursday afternoon and proceeded to the local Church of England cemetery, where the remains were interred with those of her husband. The chief mourners were Messrs. James, John, Fred and Harry Davies (sons): Mesdames R. Rushby, J. Houlahan (representing the daughter, Mrs. T. Lowden. M. Reinhardt, T. Harris, and J. Note*From Lorraine Eddy nee Lawrence (family story about Mary Ann Adams, daughter of Elizabeth "Granny" Adams

Mary Ann was born at Garden Island prematurely as a result of her Mother, a midwife, going ashore to assist the captains wife who was in labour after the Rockingham was wrecked . The Captain and crew went to Garden Island and the rest of the passengers were taken ashore to Clarence.

Like her mother she became a midwife and delivered babies walking from Fremantle to Claremont in all weather, as well as nursing many folk and members of her family. She died in her sons' fishing shack on Garden Island on February 17th 1914, aged 84, and was buried in her husband's grave.

I have listened to many accounts of this lady from various members of her family who said she was a terrible old lady with and exceptionally hard nature. She raised my grandmother, whose opinion was the worst I had heard. While researching their lives I have come to respect her a great deal. She arrived into this world in extreme poverty and hardship only to live a life of constant anxiety, married to a well educated deserter of the British Navy, herself totally illiterate and to raise ten children of her own, besides two grandchildren.

All the Adams and Davies family lived in close proximity. In 1925, Ethel Sarah Davies, her grandaughter and my grandmother, gave all the remaining papers and the ships clock of the "Rockingham" to the Historical Society of WA to be passed to a museum should one ever be established at Rockingham. These were stored at the Round House in Fremantle and when I enquired to have access I was told that they had been neglected and are now "lost". Only the clock remained and its whereabouts seemed vague.

... note Vicky Cooper has a newspaper clipping which states that Mary Ann died at home in Howard St Fremantle.

Note*From Lorraine Eddy nee Lawrence

Born to Henry Charles Davies,(mechanic) Mariner of Plymouth, Cornwall, England in 1818. Mother's name unknown. William was well educated, and known to have spoken 5 languages fluently. Under his father's influence he joined the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of Midshipman, while aboard the "Champion" in the Western Australian waters in 1852. The vessel was on loan from her Majesty Queen Victoria to the Colonies, and stationed at Sydney covering charter work and other naval duties. She was working from Albany ( in 1846) as far north as Port Hedland. During these years she also sailed to Singapore and other foreign ports (see Mitchell Library records). On January 9th, 1852 the "Champion" was attempting to cross the mouth of the Swan River, against strong advice, in order to reach Melville Water where it was planned to carry out much needed repairs and re-fitting, but ran aground and was severely damaged. Attempts were made to re-float her by blasting the sand bar in which William sustained a broken leg and swam ashore and hid amongst the rocks at Arthurs Head. He was now a deserter and for this the penalty was death by hanging. The "Champion" now inside the river and in an even worse state, was advertised on January 16th to be placed for auction under the hammer of the Governor's auctioneer, Mr Samson, at the "Crown & Thistle" hotel on the 27th. After her sale she was known as the S.S. Champion and some years later ran aground near Bunbury and broke up in the surf.

Meanwhile William had been discovered by 16 year old Mary Ann Adams, who with the care of her father, William, took him home to be nursed. In June 1852 William and Mary were married under a special licence at the Anglican Church in Fremantle, without witnesses, which under law was required at that time. His marriage certificate lists his occupation as Town Policeman. Soon after they moved to Bunbury where William was employed as an interpreter to the French Immigrants and some of his children were born there. The family returned to Fremantle, where the last 10 of his offspring were born. The Davies family lived mainly south of the main city block to the Beaconsfield area. Over the years William worked for the Customs and tendered the Rottnest Lighthouse. His grandchildren told me that in the later years of his life he could be seen dressed in a black suit and top hat in winter and a tusser silk suit and top hat during summer. All year round he carried a silver coated walking cane and in the days before his his death he told his grandson, that it was a tragedy that he could not nominate him for a career at sea. He died in 1902, a sad man whose career was closed to him, who as he grew older yearned for the green fields of Cornwall, and died on an alien shore.

He kept his papers in a little black box and for many years told his family that the papers within were very important and would one day entitle them to wealth. He and his wife did not end their years happily together, education and background always separating them. After his death Mary Ann burned the box suspecting the contents to be lies. In 1910 a London law firm came to Perth for proof of their identity to claim their entitlement for shares in family property and wealth in Edinburugh and Hamburg. What they required to have this entitlement was now ash.

His funeral notice lists his last residence at 41 Glyde St, Fremantle, but his burial details show 41 Russell Street, Fremantle. He is buried in the Carrington Street Cemetery (Fremantle) with his wife Mary Ann, his grandaughter Ada Gertrude and Grandson James Gabriel, children of his son James Gabriel. There are two other people buried with him and one I believe to be James Gabriel's wife, Alice Sarah nee' Dellar. The grave with headstone can be found in the Anglican A (old) section plot/grave number 959.

"William David Davies, as I remembered him". Narrated by his grandson , Maxwell Davies to me, Lorraine Eddy, on August 15th 1978.

" I remember vividly the last time I saw grandfather alive. The family went to his home in South Street for the traditional tea one Sunday evening in September 1902. Grandma spoke in her usual querilous manner, but grandfather was his typical hearty self. Although he was at sea for many years he did not have the typical rolling gate that sailors have, but carried himself with a certain stiffness of shoulders and carried his head high. He gave the impression of extreme height but when he stood alongside some one else it was seen that tallness was an illusion and that he was of average height. His facial characteristics were piercing blue eyes, deep set, and a rather beaky nose, and clean shaven. My elder brother Laddie (Fred) was his favourite and when my mother complained that Laddie was untidy he said 'send him to sea - that's the place to cure untidy habits. My tragedy is that I cannot nominate him for a career at sea.' We had tea at 5 o'clock and afterwards Grandfather took Laddie for a walk, and of course I went along too as my brother would not go without me and guarded me always. I noticed that whenever Grandfather spoke to a man on his walk the man invariabley touched his forelock, called him 'sir', and answered with instinctive servility. My contribution at one time was to comment on how green a certain paddock was and my grandfather turned on me in a fierce manner and said ' if you had seen the green fields of Cornwall you would not call that green'. I was only a child of 5 years, and though I remembered the words the real meaning of his utterances were lost on me. Years afterwards as I think of him I realize he was a very unhappy man, with his profession and homeland closed to him and he would have to end his days on an alien shore".
