Note* | Alfred died on the 2 June 1867, aged 16 years. Cause of death - Effusion of blood in the Ventricles of the brain. The informant was James Ainsworth his brother-in-law of Drumborg. He was buried by John Rigby, undertaker and the Minister who officiated was Josiah ? - name unreadable. Source: Death Certificate - Joy Moore At the Digby Cemetery Alfred is listed on a Plaque of burials but no headstone exists. INQUEST: Source: Joy Moore obtained a copy of Alfred's Inquest. The inquest was held at Heywood on the 6 June 1867. Witnesses called by the coroner were - James Ainsworth, James Moore and Henry Briton. Depositions given at the inquest were as follows: James Ainsworth: "I am a carrier residing at Drumborg. I have seen the body of the deceased lying in this house. It is that of Alfred Moore. About ten minutes after seven o'clock on the second of June, the deceased was in bed and I do not think properly awake, when he was attacked with a fit. He was insensible. He ground his teeth, he did not foam at the mouth. I was awake and in the same tent where we had been sleeping for the night. He commenced to cry out and make a noise and I knew at once he was in a fit and took him up in my arms. He had previously had three fits when he was along with me. He had not had any attendance in the previous fits. On this occasion, I sent for the trooper thinking the deceased was dead. He said he could do nothing that I must send for a doctor. I did so ... Dr Bya... arrived from Merino between three and four in the afternoon and stated that he was dead. Then Dr Bya.... told me I had better acquaint the trooper, to let the Coroner, Mr. Radford, know of the death. The trooper, Constable Hole, subsequently told me that he had left word at Mr. Radford's home. The Coroner was not there by Tuesday. The father and the mother of the deceased moved the body down to Heywood, on their own authority, I Believe. The deceased struggled in my arms for about five minutes and then I think he died." James Moore: "I am a Labourer, residing at Lyons township. I am the father of the deceased, Alfred Moore, sixteen years of age. I have seen his body lying in this house. My son has been subject to fits since about four years ago. He never had medical attendance for these fits. He used to be insensible for a very short time, in a kind of fainting fit. At the time of the deceased's death I was about 22 miles away from him. On the third of June, my daughter-in-law *, Tamar Turley, came to me and informed me that my son was dead. My wife and myself went up at once to within a mile and a half of Digby. We saw the boy lying there dead. On the fourth of June, I went to Constable Hole and asked him whether Mr. Radford, the Coroner, would be there that day. He said he believed he would, that he had firm notice at his residence at Casterton that he wanted to hold an inquest on my son. I waited all day on Tuesday until the mail from Casterton came by at one o'clock in the day thinking there would be some letter or advise from Mr. Radford as to when he would hold an inquest. I received none. He sent no word. So I waited till sundown and then removed the body to my home at Drumborg, three miles from Heywood. Before removing the body, I inquired of the policeman, "Could I take the body down?" He told me, "No." That I should be responsible on my own account. I brought the body down on my own responsibility to Drumborg as I could get no information as to whether Mr. Radford meant to hold an inquest. I gave notice, the first thing in the morning after arriving at Drumborg, to Constable Riley of Heywood who directed the body to be brought to Heywood and stated that he would send information to the Coroner at Portland. I have no suspicion whatever of any kind of foul play with respect to my son's death. * Tamar Turley was in fact Marion Moore's daughter from her first marriage. Henry Briton: I am a legally qualified medical practitioner residing in Portland. I, this day, made a post mortem examination of the body of the deceased in accordance with instructions of the Coroner at Portland. Externally there were no marks of violence, except a slight abrasion on the outside of the left knee joint. From the history of the case, I opened the skull and found the longitudinal tissues full of black blood and the veins of the Dusa.... all congested. The veins on the substance of the brain were also congested. In both ventricles of the brain, I found..... of organized blood. I subsequently opened his chest and found his lungs perfectly healthy, the heart flabby but healthy, the right ventricle containing clots of grievous black blood, the left ventricle was empty. The auricles were normal..... . His hands were partially clutched. I am of the opinion that his death was occasioned by effusion of blood in the ventricles of the brain. Part of the effusion of blood in the ventricles was of some standing, being partially organized.1 |

Note* | Emily loved writing poems. Below are some samples of her work: THE FARMER'S LIFE Oh happy is the farmer's life, Though not always free from care and strive. A very healthy life you'll say, Out at work in the fields all day. It's pleasant to be in the fields all day, With the sweet perfume of new mown hay. To sit down under a shadey tree, And eat nice cakes and drink hot tea. And then my boys, when lunch is done, You have to go out in the boiling sun. Out in the fields from daylight to dark, When you have to do it it's not such a lark. Then in winter there's ploughing to do, And a lot of sowing and harrowing too. Feeding the horses and brushing them down, Who wouldn't be a farmer and live out of town. Then there's the grubbing, a splendid pastime, For all who would like to work in that line. Our boys don't like it, the roots are too tough, They would rather be grubbing round a good old plum duff. A farmer's life is very healthy, If he is thrifty, he'll soon be wealthy. T'is a very good spec, Although rather rough, Now, about it, I think, I've said quite enough. E.S. Holmes 1881 SHEARING TIME. The sun is shining bright, the flowers are gay, All nature's in bright array, But I'm sad and lonely all day, Because the boys are all away. No laughter or jokes go gaily round, There is no merry music sound. No one comes home at close of day, Because the boys are all away. I think that now they'll soon be home, We'll make up then for being alone. I declare I'm getting quite melancholy, It's time they were home to make me jolly. The sun is bright, the heavens are blue, The trees and flowers are smiling too, Everything seems bright and glad, Because, tomorrow, comes the lads. The lads are coming home from shearing, Merry sounds we'll soon be hearing, The shearers cry, "Wool here", "Tar here" While the wool pickers strive to make the board clear. Then you bet we'll have a dance, Whenever we can get the chance. We'll never think of being sad Because you see, we have the lads. Emily Sarah Holmes 1882. A CHRISTMAS REVERIE Thrice welcome happy Christmas Thrice welcome happy day Bring healing calm unto our hearts Chase all sad thoughts away. Shed on our minds a Holy Calm Speak peace unto our breasts, Let no sad fears or scolding tears Disturb our peaceful rest. This is the happy blessed time When unto us was given A Saviour dear who suffered here But who now reigns in heaven. What bitter untold agonies for us he did endure For us, for us, what wondrous love, Oh why are we not pure for he has paid the awful price Of all our blackened sin And everlasting life is ours If we believe in him. Reproaches bitter, sharp and keen With all their venomed sting Was heaped on him who knew no guile Our Saviour, Prince and king. Upon his broad and noble brow A crown of thorns was placed They smote him as they cried aloud While blood dropped from his face. Methinks such wondrous love as this Would melt a heart of stone, Alas, Alas, there's not a heart More hardened not than my own. E. Moore 1887.1 |

Note* | The following is a quote from a letter sent to Ted Sumbler in May 1997 from Michelle Bentley, a descendant of Susan. "I am descended from Tamar Bradley who was born in the Union Hotel in Hobart. I am sure you would have her details about her marriage to Peter Turley who also came from Tasmania. Tamar's first born was Susannah, from whom I am descended. Susannah married Edward Doyle (bigamously as it turned out, as he was already married.) They lived in Ararat where his first wife also lived. It is amazing that neither party legally remarried their second spouses. I would have thought that even though it was very expensive to obtain a divorce then, given the fact that Edward was taken to court and charged with bigamy, they would have become "legal." I also find it strange that Edward moved Sussanah to Ararat where he knew his first wife still lived. My grandfather, Thomas Edward Doyle was born in 1901. He married Myrtle Young in 1922. They had eight children including my Dad, Clarence Thomas Doyle who was born on the 30 July 1928. It becomes a bit of a mess thereafter, because Dad married twice (my mother three times), so that I have a half sibling who is younger than two of my children." ______________________________________________ #The spelling of Susan's name only appeared as Sussanah on her death entry, on all other occasions Susan was used. When she died, her death was registered under Susannah Doyle. |

Note* | Quote once again from Vanda Saville's Book. "George Turley's wife, Janet, made headlines in newspapers when she was still baking bread at the age of 94 years. Janet recalled the first train arriving in Hamilton and the excitement that prevailed. The children all marched in procession and the girls wore white dresses with blue sashes. The train made a great difference to travel but we still went about in buggies or on horeseback. When aged 99 years, Mrs Turley was pictured on the front page of "The Spectator" (1970) with her two daughters, Lucy and Jessie. Janet was born at Branxholme in 1871 and married George Turley at Pleasant Hills in 1905." |
