|
Note* | Notes from Louis Daniels On 14 November 1859 he married Hannah Emma Bradley Hill, also called on the affidavid Anna Jane Bradley Hill, (263), aged 19. The reason for the confusion about her name seems to arise from her mother's matrimonial history. On the birth records of their children her maiden name is given as Bradley. She was born Anne Jane Bradley in 1840, daughter of Samuel Bradley, an ex-convict who arrived in 1825 on the Lady East. This ship arrived on 9 April 1825, having left London on 16 December 1824, with 210 male convicts on board. When the ship arrived in Hobart the surgeon-superintendent William McDowell faced an inquiry into charges of gross ill-treatment and excessive punishment, but was exonerated by the magistrate. . Henry and Hannah were married in the vestry of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Hobart, by the Rev'd J.W.G.Mackintosh, and one of the witnesses was M.Mackintosh, probably the minister's wife. This clearly implies a very low-key event, probably because they had already produced one child, who died at one month old, and were expecting another in less than three months. Her step-father, John Hill, was the other witness, necessary as she was underage, only 19. Henry was 29. They produced ten children, only five of whom reached adulthood. All of the children were born on licensed premises, and grew up in them, and Rosa Mitson, likewise born in a pub, grew up and worked in them until she married in 1878. Henry and Hannah Mitson both died in 1879. Hannah, (called Harriett Jane in the death record) died on 15 February from "apoplexy and chronic hepatitis with jaundice", which sounds like kidney failure, aged only 38, at her home in the "Plough and Harrow" Inn, Murray Street, (1670), and Henry followed on 19 September, from "softening of the brain and convulsions", (2079), leaving five children, aged from 15 to 9 years old, and probably Rosa Mitson, their 19 year old niece as well. The bad news about Henry's health conveyed to John Mitson in New Zealand nine years before, blamed by his elder brother on smoking, may well mean that he had suffered ill health all those years. They were buried at the new Queenborough Cemetery at Sandy Bay, in the same grave as their five children who died in infancy. Who took responsibility for the orphaned family? Could it have been Aunt Arbery? |
