"Mr. Moore was born at Drumborg in the Western District on the 15th September 1886 and in his younger days was engaged in saw milling in that area. He married Agnes Price in 1909 and continued to reside in the Western District where he showed his ability as a keen sportsman, participating in rifle shooting, football and cricket. With a family of three children, he moved to the Bellarine Peninsula to undertake contracting work with the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, where he used a team of horses and scoops to form the reservoir which still exists in the Grubb Road area. On completion of this work he came to Queenscliff and worked at Swan Island and just prior to retiring was employed by the Department of Works and Housing. Mr. Moore, whose wife died nine years ago, has two of his three children living in the Borough of Queenscliff. His eldest son, Algie, resides at Mount Gambier. He also has eight grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Two of his grandchildren have been actively associated with Local Government in the Queenscliff Borough - his grandson, Cr. Fred Moore is now serving his fourth term with the Queencliff Council and his grand-daughter is Mrs Leonore Anderson who was Mayoress of the Borough in 1974/75. Mr Moore is in good health and enjoys gardening as a hobby." Source: Press Cutting from Daisy Rundell. in 1976.1 |

Milit-Beg* | He began military service on 21 March 1942 at Heywood, VictoriaG, Warrant Officer 2, V351359, Army VDC Notes prepared from Don's War Record from National Archives Canberra and account written by his son, Hugh. Don was aged 19 years and 8 months when he had his medical in Portland after enlisting for the First World War. He was 5 feet, 6 inches tall, had gray eyes with brown perforation, fair hair and a medium complexion. The only distinctive mark was a boney projection on his right wrist. His Attestation Paper was dated 10 July 1915, he was then 19 years and 9 months. He was a Blacksmith's Assistant, employed by J. Vanner, for 9 months. Army Service: 10 July 1915 - 2 September 1915 - Private with Depot Infantry 2 September 1915 - Transferred as Driver No. 2 Engineers, Field Company 1 January 1916 - Tel-e-kebir 23 March 1916 - Alexandria 29 March 1916 - Disembarked Marseilles 1 January 1917 - with unit in France 19 June 1917 - 3 July 1917 - Furlough to England 6 February 1918 - 16 February 1918 - Leave to Paris !9 August 1918 - 6 September 1918 - Leave to U.K. 19 January 1919 - M/out for RTA 25 January 1919 - Disembarked U.K. 28 March 1919 - Division embarked Southampton 15 May 1919 - Disembarked Melbourne, returned home on the "City of Poona" 6 July 1919 - Certificate of Discharge issued. Don spoke of the places he served, Egypt, France and England but never mentioned his actual was service. He did mention an English soldier who lived sixteen miles inland and it was not until he joined the Army that he saw the sea. Post WW1, he was employed in earthworks in the Grampian region in the construction of Pine Lake and Taylor Lake. Horses and scoops were used to carry out this work. A typical day would be - rise at 4 or 5 a.m. to feed the horses - back to camp for breakfast- work until dark- feed the horses- eat and retire around 10p.m. At this time he would have been employed by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission. The Government during the 2nd World War formed a "Dad's Army" known as the VDC (Voluntary Defence Corps). The volunteers were issued with uniforms and 303 rifles and Don's unit was centred around Heywood. The group had a Bren gun. They used to hold parades and engaged in rifle shooting at the rifle range some four or five kilometres south of Heywood, off the Portland Road. Don's record for this period: In 1946 Don endeavoured to enlist in the Army but was rejected for reasons unknown - probably his age of 46 years. 17 April 1942 - Posted 8 Btn. VDC Part-time 10 December 1942 - Promoted A/WO 11 Heywood 10 May 1945 - Promoted WO 11 Heywood 20 September 1945 - Discharged.5 |
Note* | "A man who was well known in the Heywood/Drumborg districts passed away at the Portland and District Hospital at the age of 67 years. Donald Matheson Moore was the son of early pioneers and spent his life in the Heywood, Drumborg and Hotspur areas. Mr. Moore served with the AIF 2nd Field Engineers during World War 1 and held the rank of Class 2 Warrant Officer with the local unit of the VDC during World War 11. He was an employee of the Shire of Portland for 28 years, also having farming interests in Drumborg. The Moores retired to live in Edgar Street, Heywood in 1957. Mr Moore was a foundation member of the RSL Sub-branch and served as Secretary in 1940/41, was President for 1944/45 and 1950/51. He was also Chaplain for many years. Mr. Moore was a foundation member of the Heywood Golf Club and a foundation member of the Heywood Bowling Club where he held the positions of both President and Captain at varying times. He was one of the original trustees of the Heywood RSL Memorial Hall and was appointed a Life Member of the Heywood Race Club for his outstanding service, including 18 years as President. While in the Hotspur district he spent some years as President and Secretary of the then flourishing Hotspur Show Society. In his earlier years, Mr Moore, was a keen and able tennis player. Failing health in recent years was due to War injuries received in France." Source: One of the local Hamilton or Portland papers. The War period saw a number of austerity and civil defence actions. Examples of some of these were: In Heywood, the school ground had a trench for the safety of children. All houses had to black out their windows at night. All vehicles had to have their headlights masked, allowing only a small beam of light to escape. Vehicle bumper bars were painted white as a safety measure at night. Tobacco, butter, tea, clothing and petrol were some of the goods purchased through ration coupons. Don's petrol ration was 4 gallons per month. As one local was heard to remark, "Just bloody enough to drive to the bowser to receive it and drive home again." The local policeman was able to give a vehicle owner an additional ration of petrol in an emergency e.g. to attend the funeral of a family member. Gas producers were made as an alternative to petrol. Wood was burnt in pits, the charcoal gathered and burnt in the gas producer which was fastened to the running board of the vehicle. It is believed Don did not complete grade six at school. In spite of this he was a good speller, a neat writer and good at basic arithmetic. Perhaps it was his own lack of education that was the driving force in him being one of the prime movers in having a State School built at Drumborg. Again, in 1945, he organized petitions etc. to have the Education Department run a school bus from Dartmoor to Portland to provide secondary education for country students. With the formation of the RSL after World War 1, Heywood had a very active sub-branch and Don developed a very deep interest in the branch, as an active member and serving the branch as both Secretary and President for various extended terms. Bon was also an active member of the Ladies' Auxiliary. The RSL conducted an annual Picnic Race Meeting at the local track which was situated on the Etrich Road, about six kilometres east of Heywood. don was active on the committee which organized the pre day race activities - to erect and maintain the limited running rail and to conduct the meeting. There was always an official race steward but all other operational activities were carried out by locals. The farm at Drumborg, which was the original William (Bill) Moore homestead was inherited by Don on the death of his parents in the early 1940's. The farm was small (90 acres) and Don continued to work for the Shire of Portland as a living could not be made from the 300 ewes run on the property. The ewes were for fat lamb raising. Maintenance was done at weekends. Inheritance of the farm by Don did cause some dissension within the family but we must bear in mind that it was Don and Bon who moved in with and cared for each of the old folks until their deaths. The spreading of phosphate, cutting and raking of grass was all done by a horse drawn appliance. There was always a Clydesdale on the property as Don required one for his work on the roads. They were a patient, quiet and amenable animal. The marking of fat lambs, footrotting, dagging, crutching and shearing of the sheep required constant effort and whilst shearers were engaged each year there was seldom a weekend without livestock requiring attention, fencing requiring maintenance or thistles needing cutting. Don had a phobia about having pastures clear of thistles. A thistle plant, because of its very nature inhibits stock grazing near it, so of a paddock became infected with thistles it was not unlikely that in time 50% or more of the area was no longer available for grazing. Accordingly, a lot of time was spent with a hoe, walking around the paddocks cutting thistles which had germinated from seeds blown on to the property. It was essential to carry out the above because of Sunnyside's limited area. The farmhouse was weatherboard, traditional for its era. A narrow passageway down the centre with three rooms off each side. There was a skillion addition at the back, comprising a store room and bathroom. The laundry was detached from the house, some 20 metres away. This was for safety reasons as it had a wood fired copper. Heating was by an open fireplace and cooking done on a wood-fired stove. Until c1948 lighting was by candles, kerosene lamp and a pressure light. A thirty two volt home electricity system was installed around 1948 as was the purchase of a kerosene refrigerator. Until then the only method of food maintenance was a Coolgardie safe. Prior to the puchase of the refrigerator, when family gatherings were held at Christmas time, jellies etc. were lowered into the underground well to help them set and keep cool. All household water was from rain water tanks (Scarce in summer) and a bath was taken (water shared between all the household) weekly. When Don and Bon were married in 1931, they lived in the school house in Hotspur. Hotspur being located on the Crawford River (known locally as the Smokey river) on the road between Drumborg, Digby and Merino. At this time, Don was employed by the Shire of Portland. Until the later years of his employment,(probably the last eight or ten) when he was a Foreman of roadworks, was road repair and maintenance. This covered the period they were living at Hotspur and when the family moved into the Moore home at Drumborg. Over that period, his duty was to find gravel in the bush along the roadside between Drumborg and Hotspur, remove the earth overburden, and then by pick and shovel open up gravel pits, (the face would be approximately 60 cms in height) load his horse drawn dray and fill pot holes in the road. The road in question was not sealed and was subject to becoming both pot holed and corrugated. To cope with the corrugated surface, he used a "drag" (not unlike a sledge) which was pulled at a 70 degree angle to present a dual cutting edge to the road surface. The "drag" cut the tops off the corrugation and filled the hollows at the same time. The "drag" was also horse drawn and was the predecessor of the current motorised grader. Another of his duties was to maintain the drains along the sides of the road by removing leaves, sticks and silt. in June 1963 at Portland, Victoria.1 |

At t he time of their marriage, William was residing at Homerton and Margaret at Drumborg. Rev. Jabez William Edwards, Wesleyan Minister, officiated at the marriage ceremony at the Drumborg Wesleyan Church. Witnesses to their marriage were George Palethorpe and Jessie Clarke. Following their marriage, William and Margaret built a small cottage at Homerton, along the Heywood Road, where they lived until 1923. They planted a number of fruit trees around their home. It was from here that the family moved to Camperdown. William was a Labourer on surrounding properties and as a Shearer travelled to NSW for several months each year. Roy, their youngest was the only child delivered by a Doctor, all the others were delivered by Mrs Christopher Bell (Kit Bell) a well known midwife in the Heywood area. Horses were a valued asset being the only means of transport, and much time was spent in caring for them. Each child learnt to ride, feed and groom them from an early age. Bill and Maggie were active members of the Salvation Army. They attended services at the Citadel in Heywood. Source: Dorothy Knights book – “Yeoman and Palethorpe Families.”.2 |

Note* | Raised by James & Emily Alfred was born to Jemima prior to her marriage to William Spencer – I have been told his father died in a flooded creek. Alfred's father is listed as Unknown on the birth certificate and also his marriage certificate. Verbal history passed down through the family is that someone by the name of King was the father of Alf and that he died by drowning whilst riding on horseback to marry Jemima. It is unknown when this event took place - before or after Alf's birth. Following Jemima's death, her brother James and his wife Emily took Alf in and cared for him.
