Alfred was born in Northam, one of 7 children, and a second generation of 2 pioneer families. He inherited his fathers property known as "Rock-Vale", which was taken over by his eldest surviving son Malcolm 12 months before his death in 1997. He spent all his life heavily involved in community affairs with a very-much-hands on approach as well as holding executive positions. He was a large, strong man who believed in family and the greater good of the communities in which he lived; a selfless and tireless worker who never sought or believed in public reward. His main interests were conservation, local historical and museum works, tourism, volunteer fire officer, volunteer ambulance driver, monument builder and numerous farming boards. He was awarded an Australia Day award for 50 years service to the community which embarressed him more than pleased him. He was a thorough researcher and writer of Historical works and joint author of several books. After Connie died he remarried, a divorcee from NSW, Amelia Wilhemenia Esme' Browne (nee Stratford) taking on 3 step-children which he raised as his own. With his second wife he travelled around Europe for 12 months, covered large areas of Australia in his landrover, and went on a trip to Malaysia and Borneo with his daughter in 1982 , spending several weeks in Kuching and staying at an Iban longhouse. He accompanied his granddaughter, Helen, throughout Malaysia at the end of her high school years before she settled into studies at University. He spent the last 30 years of his life at Augusta, a town who were shocked at his sudden death (at 82 yrs) serving his community to his last breath, believing him immortal. He was laid to rest with flowers grown by Connie above her in her grave at Northam. He was married to both of his wives for 19 years. |
