Note* | John Mason arrived in the Swan River Colony in 1830 as a Sergeant in the 63rd Regiment. After his discharge from the Army in 1834 he became an Innkeeper and later the first Warder at the (then) new Albany gaol. There is a plaque at the gaol alongside the hard wooden beds the warders slept on stating he was the first warder at that particular (now tourist) gaol. Between 1830 and 1834 whilst still in the Army he was in charge of the Commissariat there. He passed away in 1841 at quite a young age. Their son Isaac who was born at Swan River became the Bailiff at Albany and his wife Rose was a well known midwife there. Another of John's sons Benjamin was a sawmill owner with a Mr Bird up in the Darling Range and they built a railway to convey the timber down to Cannington where Masons Landing is situated and from there the timber was floated down to Fremantle. Mary Ann Mason died 3 June 1864 at Perth.1 |
