THE LATE MRS. SARAH WILLIAMS The late Mrs. Sarah Williams, who passed away at Fremantle on March 10, was a link with the very early history of W.A. being a daughter of the late John and Mary Adams, who were among the pioneers. The deceased was born at Fremantle 76 years ago, and was married at 21 years of age to the late Mr. Lewis Williams, a prominent pearler, with whom she immediately went North in the schooner Ethel. She accompanied her husband from Shark Bay along the coast northward as far as Swan Point. King's Sound. There it was essential for the party to obtain water, for which purpose they landed, and were con- fronted by hostile natives, who, when they discovered a woman was one or the party, became friendly. She was the first white woman to land at Carnarvon, 55 years ago, where a tent formed their residence. She also was the first white woman to land at Roebuck Bay, now Broome, and at most other now im- portant centres on our North-West coast. Their headquarters for some years was on the storm-swept Montebella Is- lands off Onslow, where many hard- ships were endured. About 15 years ago they returned to Fremantle where they intended living in retirement, but her husband died shortly afterwards. The deceased was highly respected by every one with whom she was associated. The funeral cortege moved from her late re- sidence, 21 South-street. South Freman- tle, on Wednesday, March 12, and pro- ceeded to the Fremantle Cemetery where the remains were interred in the Church of England portion. The Rev. Canon Collick officiated at the grave side. The chief mourners were: Messrs. James, Harry and William Adams (bro- thers) Mesdames A. Gilmore and W. F. Hopkins (sisters), Messrs. A. Gilmore and W. Hopkins (brothers-in-law). Mrs. W. Adams (sister-in-law), Mrs. W. S. Hall (uncle), Mesdames T. A. Black, W. Lyons, F. Soley and Miss S. L. Adams. (nieces), Messrs. F. J., J., and E. W. Adams, W. Gilmore, L. and W. Hopkins, I. Booth, W. Lyons, F. Soley (nephews). J. Davies, C. Chamberlain and N. Hop- kins (cousins). The pall-bearers were: Messrs. T. Whitewood, B. Sweetman, A. Chamberlain, W. Willis, T. Groves, C. Atwell. S. Caporn. and J. Marks. Numerous floral tributes were placed on the grave, and many expressions of sympathy have been received by the bereaved relatives. The funeral arrange- ments were in the hands of Messrs. Ar- thur E. Davies and Company.2,3 |
