Note* | Family story relates that Windy, the twin of a aboriginal was 'adopted' by Alexander Chamberlain during his years in Broome. Rumour has it that only one twin was ever allowed to survive, so he was adopted by Alexander. Unsure if ever legallly adoped, but assumed the name Chamberlain & grew up with the other children, Served in WW2, and after lived in the WA Wheatbelt. Was married and believed to have children. Margaret Brice, G daughter of Alex and Juanita can remember meeting him after the war. Notes from Una Norris: "Windy Joseph Chamberlain (adopted )by Dad when 4 months old, was going to be killed & possibly eaten as there was a bad drought at the time and enough food could not be obtained for all the tribe. His mother was a young full blood and father a Manilaman, who looked after dad's shore camp at Cape Bossat. Men on the schooner looked after him, fed his condensed milk spooned straight from the tin. To bath him, he was thrown overboard & men would dive in after him and play about. Naturally in time he could swim like a fish, he was always a happly boy, but even so could have his "days off" when he would just sulk, but he was ignored. Later I met a man who told me how they loved going to play with him after dad and mum got married because he always had more toys than other children." |
