Alice Maude* Bradley

| Maude Bradley |

Note* | Shea family used to own 4 acres near where the Palmyra Hotel is now.
Recollections...Alwyn Robert Smith Nov 2001 Alice Maude Shea (nee Bradley) My Grandmother (maternal) Experienced a tragic life having three of her adult children die in 1942 all within twelve months.
She and her husband in the late 1920's farmed a small property on the Dowerin - Wyalkatchme road just south of Benjaberring. Like a lot of others the depression caught up with them and they were forced to leave the farm. William, her husband headed for Wiluna where he managed Bunnings Timber Company. They supplies the timber supports for the mines being worked in the area at the time.
Alice moved to Minnivale and ran a business of cafe/boarding house. here she raised her five children. About 1933 she left and they purchased a home at 44 Dalkeith Road, Nedlands, which is still owned by the family. Bronwyn Shea, daughter of George, lives there.
William Shea returned from Wiluna about 1939 and became the manager of the Causeway Timber Company ( a Division of Bunnings). He did not return to the family and lived in a flat in Adelaide Terrace. Not living together for a number of years saw a rift develop between them. They did not divorce but never again lived together.
From what I could see they never had anything in common, both differed politically, one with stronf leftist views (William), she was right wing. He was a heavy drinker which antagonised her greatly. I saw the evidence of this when i lived with Nana Shea in the years 1935/37. Grandfather Shea would only bring the maintenance to her when he had picked up "dutch courage" with a few whiskies. in that state she would not let him into the house and if he was sober he wouldn't come. I became the meat in the sandwich, he would give me an envelope containing around three pounds (six dollars) and say "give this to your grandmother".
Whilst living with her in Nedlands I found her to be a very strict disciplinarian, she showed little love towards me but I guess deep down it was there. Unfortunately she alienated all her family with the exception of George who stuck to her to the end. She lived to a great age but died a very lonely person. |

Catherine Agnes (Kit*) Bradley

Note* | Recollections...Alwyn Robert Smith Nov 2001
Catherine Finch (Kit) Great Aunt. Did not ever meet her husband Ken. Not aware of second husband.
Worked for many years at the Ocean Beach hotel wher she was the Sweets Cook. She was there during the war when the hotel was an R&R for the US Navy. She used to bring us hard to get goods such as chocolates, cigarettes when she visited her sister Alice in Nedlands. Believe it or not she had Alice smoking Camels and Lucky Strikes. It did not last long when the supply ran out.
Her grand daughter was my second love, we were both around 5-6 years of age, her names escapes me. |

Note* | Recollections...Alwyn Robert Smith Nov 2001 Annie Gray Swindell (nee Bradley)... My Great Aunt. L never knew her husband but he worked in the timber industry and they lived in the hamlet of Holyoake. Holyoake was destroyed by bushfire in 1960. The township was adjacent to Dwellingup.
Charles Swindell died around 1932 and left Annie a widow with two children, Leslie and Ethel. She left Holyoake soon after her husband's death and came to reside in the city. The Como picture theatre was opened about 1935 and she applied for and was granted the theatre shop concession. Takings on the first night were seven shillings and sixpence (seventy five cents). It was the height of the depression and people had little money to spend on luxury items such as sweets and icecreams. She struggled for many months to make a success of the jellies etc. In the end the economic state of the country was such she was forced to call it quits and close the business down.
Annie then returned to live in Minnivale where she had spent her early years. She took with her three young pre school children, her grand children Neville, Pam and Judith, progeny of her son Les whose marriage had ended in divorce. He was working in the coal mines in Collie. This lady was a gentle lady, much like her mother. She lived in the house in Minnivale opposite the school. It is still there. She resided for over forty years only leaving when advancing years saw her unable to lokk after herself. I feel she had a sad life, her son rarely visited her and daugher Ethel married the State Manager of Dunlop Rubber Co and was more interested in hob knobbing with Perth celebrities than taking an interest in her mother. |

Note* | Recollections...Alwyn Robert Smith Nov 2001 Frank Bradley - Great Uncle. Worked in the hardware dept of Bairds (later taken over by Myers). Saw him occassionally with Nana Shea (nee Bradley) who used to take me to Perth with her. Purpose of calling on brother Frank was to get a discount on some goods on the cheap. She did not really approve of him becuase he bet on race horses, but was quite prepared to acknowledge his existance if he could be of use to her.
I understand his two marriages broke up because of his inveterate gambling habits. His divorces were taboo, certainly not discussed in front of me. I don't think he was welcome at 44 Dalkeith Road Nedlands.
Recollections....Francis Lowis Bradley July 2004 Frank stayed with his Uncle Frank and Aunty Molly while George and Ruth went to England when Frank was about 4 or 5 (approx 1928/29). They had two teenage daughters. |

Birth* | Muriel Shea was born in 1905 at Ludlow, Busselton, Western Australia; reg: 6648 as Muriel Bradley. |
| She was the daughter of William Gillard Shea and Alice Maude* Bradley. |
Marriage* | Muriel Shea married Clement Campbell Smith, son of Thomas William Smith and Christina Coates, on 16 March 1927 at Minnivale, Western AustraliaG; WEDDINGS.
In the Minmvale Methodist Church on March 12, a wedding of interest was cele brated, the bridegroom being Mr. Clem Smith, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith, and the bride Miss Shea, only daughter of' Mr. and Mrs. William Shea. The Rev. T. Cook, of Dowerin officiated. The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr. George Bradley, was attired in French pleated georgette, inlet with gui- pure lace. The customary veil and orange blossom wore worn and a beautiful bou quet of white roses, carnations, and fern was carried. The bridesmaids were the Misses Bear (2) and Swindle. Miss Mary Bear wore a dainty frock of mauve georgette, embroidered with silver; Miss Dolly Bear, a pretty mauve and silver tis sue frock; and Miss Swindle (a cousin of the bride) cream georgette, trimmed with pink and mauve. Each wore a erinoline hat trimmed with mauve velvet flowers and car ried bouquets of pink carnations, roses, love in the mist and fern. The duties of best man were carried out by Mr. Percy Smith, Mr. Bert Smith acting as grooms- man. During the signing of the register, Mrs. George Bradley expressively ren dered "Until". After the ceremony a re ception was held in the Agricultural Hall where numerous guests were received. Mrs. Shea was becomingly attired in a frock of bos de rose morocain and car ried a bouquet of gold roses and fern. Mrs. Smith wore navy crepe chine, with touches of red, and carried a bou quet of red roses. A feature of the toasts was the spontaneous reception ac corded the popular bridegroom when he responded. Practicaly the whole of the honorary secretarial work of this com munity, for a number of years, has de volved upon him. Both the hall and chuch were effectively decorated for the occasion by friends of the bride. After the toasts, the hall was cleared for dancing, and during the festivities the happy couple left by motor car to tour the Great Southern as far as Albany, re- turning later through the South-West. The bride's travelling frock was a rich embroidered bois de rose crepe de chine, with which she wore a black georgette coat and a dainty hat to match. The West Australian 8/4/1927 pg 9.1 |
